Who it's for
Pilates is low impact and adapts to the person doing it. Whatever your age, body or fitness level, there is a version of every exercise that fits you.
Out of shape is a starting point, not a problem. Exercises are modified to your current ability, and the work takes you the rest of the way.
Joseph Pilates based many exercises on how babies and children move. Kids like the stretch and decompression. It makes them feel tall and strong.
Bones get more brittle and muscles weaken with age, which is what makes falls so common. Pilates strengthens muscles, bones and joints and sharpens the mind-body connection.
Deep overall conditioning that lengthens and aligns the body and evens out the imbalances that come from sport-specific training. It will challenge a professional.
The method
Pilates is a system of exercise developed over sixty years by Joseph H. Pilates. It builds strength and flexibility together, without hard strain on the joints.
The exercises return the body to its natural balance and develop it evenly, so it moves the way it was built to move. They tone, stretch and strengthen muscles, improve posture and alignment, steady your balance, get your circulation going, and teach you to breathe better.
Joseph Pilates called his system Contrology, which he described as the science and art of coordinated body, mind and spirit development through natural movements under strict control of the mind.
The original exercises, known today as matwork, are done on the floor. Later Joseph Pilates built equipment that uses spring resistance instead of weights, the reformer being the best known. The studio is equipped for this work. With or without the equipment, your own body is both the resistance and the weight, which builds real strength without bulk.
Why classical
Newer takes on Joseph Pilates' work often follow similar choreography and can offer real conditioning benefits. Most of them lose what made the original system so complete: the way it works the whole body and the mind together.
This studio teaches the traditional method, in the order and form it was written, because that is where the results come from.
“Contrology is a complete coordination of body, mind and spirit. It develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.” Joseph H. Pilates, Return to Life Through Contrology, 1945
